27 June 2025

“Voices from Telecommunications” is a space dedicated to the key figures shaping the Italian technological landscape within the telecommunications sector. In this series of exclusive interviews, industry leaders share their visions, strategies, and innovations, while also discussing their experiences collaborating with EI Towers.
Today’s guest is Sergio Natucci, Director of DAB Italia. During his talk, he illustrated how DAB has represented a true revolution in the evolution of the radio landscape. Radio remains a fundamental medium, boasting over 35 million daily listeners and serving as a prime vehicle for information, communication, and entertainment. Thanks to DAB, this traditional medium has been revitalized, renewing itself through interactivity and enriching the listener experience with multimedia content such as images, animations, and commercial information.
Digital radio offers more than just superior audio quality; it opens up new possibilities for the entire sector. Broadcasters can diversify and add interactivity to their content, while advertisers gain access to more precise and measurable advertising tools. Contextual messaging fully leverages digital capabilities, creating an increasingly rich and personalized radio ecosystem.
The figures for DAB in Italy are significant: with 14.5 million receivers and 90% national coverage, the digital technology is firmly establishing itself. In many European countries, DAB has already replaced traditional FM radio, which in some cases has been completely phased out. The new radio landscape offers diverse, segmented programming capable of catering to a wide range of audience interests. A key feature is the guarantee of reliable information—free from fake news—combined with respect for listener privacy; radio does not intrude on our lives but remains a conscious choice for those who decide to tune in. As always, the radio continues to set the rhythm of our days, accompanying us with its discreet yet constant presence.
